Ahmed Rami

An Egyptian poet of Turkish origin, born in 1892 in the Sayyida Zeinab neighborhood in Cairo. He joined the Teachers' School and graduated from it in 1914. He traveled on a mission to Paris in 1922 to study oriental languages, especially the Persian language, and document and library systems. He returned from there in 1924 after obtaining a degree in libraries from the Sorbonne University. He entered literary life in 1918, when he published his first collection of poems. The publication of this collection of his was a literary event in that era, as his collection was a new type of poetry in which the ancient and modern schools differed. In 1925, he published his second and third collections, and in 1924 he wrote his first song, which was “I fear that your love will be a pity for him.” He received many awards: In 1965, he received the State Award of Appreciation. In the same year, King Hassan II of Morocco awarded him the Moroccan Intellectual Competence Medal, excellent class. In 1967, he received the State Appreciation Award in Arts. In 1976, President Anwar Sadat honored him and granted him an honorary doctorate in arts. He received a memorial plaque engraved with his name from the Society of Authors and Composers in Paris. Ahmed Rami fell into a state of severe depression after the death of Mrs. Umm Kulthum, especially since his close friend, journalist and poet Saleh Jawdat, and before him Al-Qasabji and director Ahmed Kamel Jawdat, died before her. He refused to write anything after her until he passed away in 1981.
