Transit is a video work by Palestinian artist Taysir Batniji that confronts the reality of borders and displacement. Composed of photographs secretly taken at crossing points between Egypt and Gaza, the silent slideshow alternates images of waiting people with black screens — metaphors for emptiness and the slow passage of time. The work powerfully reflects the difficult and often impossible conditions of movement faced by Palestinians today, and meditates on the experience of existing between two cultures and two identities. It is a stark and poetic exploration of forced immobility and fractured belonging.
