The Noble Guardian is a documentary portrait of Mahbouba Seraj, a 73-year-old Afghan women's rights activist who chose to stay in Kabul when the Taliban seized power in August 2021 — despite holding a US passport and a protected escape route. As thousands desperately fought their way through the crowds at Kabul International Airport, Seraj refused to abandon the girls and women sheltering in the last remaining refuge for abused women in the country. Named one of Time Magazine's 100 Most Influential People in 2021 and shortlisted for the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize, Seraj — a Pashtun with royal lineage — embodies an extraordinary act of moral courage in the face of what is widely described as the world's most severe women's rights crisis.
