Overview

Sheikh Rohani is an Arabic-language social comedy play set in a deliberately fantastical, timeless world. At its center is a family of two brothers, Subhi and Aboud, their wives Athba and Nahla, and Subhi's son Rabie. Through the lives and dynamics of this family, the play shines a light on the hidden cracks running through the polished surfaces of modern society. In a sharp allegorical move, the play invokes the figures of Raya and Sakina — the infamous sisters of Egyptian criminal history — as symbols of the darkness lurking beneath luxury and propriety. It is a satirical examination of social hypocrisy, using an imagined world as a mirror for very real human failings.
