Overview

Sabren is a Sudanese documentary filmed over three years (2021–2023), chronicling the struggles of Sudanese revolutionaries in the wake of the October 2021 military coup — the pivotal moment that derailed the revolutionary process and set the stage for the country's devastating war. Crafted by Sudanese activists and artists, the film blends scenes of peaceful daily life with footage of protests and acts of resistance, including during Ramadan and Eid. Filmed until just weeks before the war erupted, Sabren challenges the framing of the conflict as a civil war, instead exposing the deeper capitalist and colonial forces driving the crisis and preserving a powerful record of resistance.
