The Nouba of the Women of Mount Chenoua is a landmark 1979 Algerian film directed by celebrated author and filmmaker Assia Djebar. Structured around the five movements of a traditional Algerian musical form, the film follows Lila, a thirty-year-old architect who returns to the Chenoua mountains with her disabled husband and young daughter fifteen years after independence. Haunted by her imprisonment during the resistance and consumed by the search for witnesses to her brother's wartime disappearance, Lila moves between rural women, seasonal workers, and former fighters, gradually piecing together a history written in women's voices. A profound meditation on post-colonial female identity, memory, and the right to tell one's own story.
