The Star of Algiers is an Algerian musical drama pulsing with youthful energy and social tension. Moussa, a gifted young musician, dreams of becoming the Michael Jackson of Algeria. Starting out at wedding celebrations with his small band, he steadily rises through the ranks of Algiers' nightlife to become a celebrated star. But at the height of his success, he comes face to face with a brutal and totalitarian form of political Islam, wielded by officials determined to silence him. The film is a visceral portrait of artistic ambition clashing with ideological repression in 1990s Algeria.
