Le Cantique des Pierres, known in English as Canticle of Stones, is a Palestinian drama directed by Michel Khleifi that reunites two lovers in Jerusalem nearly eighteen years after they were separated. In the 1960s, he was imprisoned for resisting the Israeli occupation while she emigrated to the United States carrying her heartbreak with her. Years later, he works for an agricultural aid organization and she has returned as a scholar researching the concept of sacrifice within Palestinian society. Their reunion unfolds against the backdrop of the first Intifada, with the violence and upheaval of the uprising surrounding their rekindled connection. Michel Khleifi's film is a lyrical meditation on memory, loss, resistance, and the persistence of love amid political turmoil.
