Journey Inside a City is a short autobiographical documentary by artist Munaf, a young woman from Baghdad navigating the intersection of personal ambition and geopolitical upheaval. Using an inventive blend of phone monologues, dashboard camera footage, and social media documentation, Munaf chronicles her life from her early attempts to create contemporary art within the severe constraints of post-war Baghdad, through the ISIS invasion that upended everything, to her emigration to Turkey — and the further shock of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, where her parents had since relocated. Intimate and formally inventive, the film collapses the distance between documentary and diary.
