Overview

Her + Him Van Leo is a documentary portrait by filmmaker Akram Zaatari dedicated to the famed Armenian-Egyptian studio photographer Van Leo, whose career in Cairo spanned nearly fifty years. The film is simultaneously a biographical study and a reflection on the evolution of photographic practice — from darkroom hand-developing to digital manipulation. Zaatari explores how Van Leo used his camera to construct multiple identities, assuming different personas and subjectivities at a time when Egyptian nationalism was asserting a narrowing definition of belonging. A rich meditation on art, identity, and resistance through self-representation.
