Overview

Frihetsligan is a documentary directed by Leyla Assaf-Tengroth, filmed in post-war Beirut during the fragile period of reconstruction. The film takes the form of a journey through the city guided by an unusual young girl who searches for her place in an urban landscape that is simultaneously hostile and inspiring. Rather than offering a conventional tour of a recovering city, Assaf-Tengroth uses her young protagonist's perspective to illuminate the contradictions of life in Beirut after years of devastating conflict — where the ruins of the past and the energy of resilience coexist on the same street corner. The film is a meditative portrait of a city and its people in the act of rediscovering themselves.
