Blood of the Palm Trees is an Arabic documentary commemorating Khaled Al-Asaad, the Syrian archaeologist who became an international symbol of courage when he refused to abandon the ancient city of Palmyra as ISIS forces closed in. Entrusted with some of the world's most irreplaceable antiquities, Al-Asaad stayed behind to protect what he could — and paid for that defiance with his life. Drawing on archival footage and testimonies, the film honors a man who believed that civilization's memory was worth dying for, and raises urgent questions about the fate of cultural heritage in the age of extremist violence.
