Chibayish 2022 is a documentary and video art work by artist Alia Farid that examines how nature in southern Iraq has been weaponized as a political tool since the advent of modernity. Filmed in the marshlands at the confluence of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers — a region now engulfed by oil infrastructure and industrial waste — the film captures Farid's exchanges with three young residents as they map their community and call out to the buffalo that roam the waters. Blending documentary footage with CGI animation, Chibayish 2022 is a richly layered exploration of cultural identity, colonial history, ecological crisis, and the right to remain — a significant work in contemporary Arab video art.
