Overview

Broken Record is a lyrical documentary journey through Iraq, driven by filmmaker Parine Jaddo's search for a lost Iraqi-Turkman song her mother used to sing — a piece she and her brothers recorded together in 1960. Though the melody lingers, the lyrics have vanished from memory, and Jaddo's quest to recover them takes her across a country whose extraordinary musical heritage has been eroded by decades of conflict and destruction. Part personal archive, part cultural investigation, Broken Record offers a rare and intimate window into Iraq's rich — and fragile — musical traditions, uncovering the human stories behind songs that survive only in fragments.
