Overview

Birthday is a Lebanese drama short set against the chaos of Beirut in May 2008. Fourteen-year-old Razan is on the eve of her birthday when armed clashes erupt across the city, shattering the normalcy of her afternoon. Yet despite the violence unfolding outside, Razan's teenage preoccupations remain stubbornly unchanged — she simply wants to celebrate like any other girl her age. The film tenderly captures the disconnect between adolescent innocence and political upheaval, using one girl's ordinary wish as a lens through which to view an extraordinary and devastating day in Lebanon's recent history.
