The Commandments — الوصايا — is a Moroccan social drama that places its protagonist Dawiya at the center of two fierce and simultaneous battles. In court, she fights her ex-husband for custody of her daughter; outside it, she struggles to protect the livelihoods and dreams of the women in her cooperative against a legal system that places them under male guardianship. Structured around nine commandments addressed to all guardians, the film uses that moral framework to interrogate patriarchal authority, the failures of family law, and the resilience of women navigating a system stacked against them. It is a layered and politically engaged work of Arabic cinema that refuses easy resolutions.
