Brotherhood is a Tunisian drama film set in the rural heartland of Tunisia, where Mohamed, a rigid and deeply conservative shepherd, lives with his wife and two sons in an existence governed by strict tradition. His ordered world is shaken to its foundations when his eldest son Malik returns home after a lengthy absence, bringing with him a mysterious new wife whose origins remain unexplained. Over the course of just three days, the simmering conflict between the authoritarian father and his returning son escalates with quiet but devastating intensity, as clashing values, unspoken truths, and the weight of family loyalty converge toward an inevitable breaking point.
Brotherhood (Ikhwène) is a short film, directed by Meryam Joobeur and released in September 2018. The film explores the tensions within a Tunisian family when the biggest son, who has been away for one year, returns home with a new Syrian wife who wears the full niqab, igniting his father's suspicions that his son has been working for the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant. The film's title was chosen to reflect both the familial connotations of the word "brotherhood" and its use in the name of the controversial Islamist organization Muslim Brotherhood.
