Um Al Dhabaab (Mother of Fog) is a UAE art film by director Nujoom Alghanem, conceived as a follow-up to her 2020 work Mother of Fire. Once again invoking the figure of the jinn from Islamic mythology, Alghanem uses the supernatural to interrogate the lingering ghosts of British imperialism in the UAE. Two teenage girls seek to free a pirate condemned to wander in purgatory at a site being developed into a hotel — a collision of past and present that is central to the work. Originally commissioned for Sharjah Biennial 15: Thinking Historically in the Present, the film weaves historical narratives with contemporary notions of piracy, identity, and colonial legacy.
