The Mad Man's Laughter is a 2021 video art work by Lebanese artist and filmmaker Alaa Mansour, who lives between Marseille and Beirut and whose practice centers on the history of violence and the power of images in the age of necropolitics. The piece takes as its starting point the October 2020 murder of French schoolteacher Samuel Paty, killed for showing caricatures of Muhammad in a lesson on freedom of expression — an event that unleashed waves of Islamophobic hate speech and reignited unresolved questions about representation and religion. Using archival footage, computer-generated images, sounds, and text, Mansour traces the latent and visible violence embedded in colonial-militarist image production and the algorithmic biases these histories continue to generate.
