The All-Hearing is a conceptual art film by sound artist Lawrence Abu Hamdan, staged against the politically charged backdrop of military-era Cairo — famously one of the noisiest cities on Earth. Abu Hamdan commissions two local sheikhs to deliver Friday sermons on the subject of noise pollution, a calculated act of subversion at a time when the military government sought to restrict sermons to approved themes. The film cuts between intimate close-ups of the sheikhs' idiosyncratic deliveries and wide shots of their congregations and the loudspeakers projecting their voices into the street — a visual essay on how the form of dissemination can undercut the content of a message.
