Spasm is a short Arabic horror film that traps its lone protagonist — a woman alone in bed late at night — in an escalating nightmare. After a mysterious phone message, she begins experiencing violent and inexplicable convulsions. Adding to the dread, a patch of green mold appears on the wall before her and slowly spreads in the darkness. The film excels at slow-burn psychological horror, using confined space, oppressive silence, and tight framing to ratchet up a sense of inescapable dread. Minimalist in its approach but maximalist in atmosphere, Spasm asks one haunting question: how do you escape a night that seems to have no end?
