The Place of Weeping Lovers is a bold and unflinching Egyptian drama that confronts deeply difficult moral terrain. The film follows a young petroleum engineer who, after losing his wife in a tragic car accident, is left to care for his small daughter alone. His demanding job requires him to travel between Cairo and Suez, so he brings a maid along to help manage the household. In a night of drunkenness and moral collapse, he commits an act of rape against her. When she becomes pregnant, he pressures her to terminate the pregnancy — only for a doctor to reveal that abortion would put her life at serious risk. The engineer is left to grapple with the devastating consequences of his actions and the ethical crisis he has created, in a film that refuses to look away from uncomfortable truths about power and vulnerability.
