Overview
Karkoon fil-Shara' (Karkoon in the Street) is an Egyptian social drama that confronts the housing crisis through the story of engineer Sharif, his teacher wife Souad, and their family, who lose their home to demolition and are forced into substandard shelter housing. Driven by the inhumane conditions, Sharif seeks refuge in his family's old courtyard, only to find Abu Douma has already taken up residence there. A prosecution order forces them to share the space, prompting Sharif to design and build an ingenious mobile wooden home. His experiment inspires a generation of young Egyptians to do the same in the desert outskirts — until municipal authorities begin dismantling the makeshift community. The film is a sharp, humanist commentary on bureaucracy, resilience, and the right to shelter.
