In the Shadow of Beirut is a documentary filmed over four years between 2018 and 2022, following three Palestinian refugee families — the Kujeyjis, Dabers, and Abeeds — along with the young father Aboodi Ziani, in the impoverished Sabra and Shatila neighborhoods of Beirut. Living without legal papers, civil rights, or prospects, these residents experienced the full brunt of Lebanon's converging catastrophes: the 2020 port explosion, a historic economic collapse, and the COVID-19 pandemic. Directed with intimate access and long-form commitment, the film is a devastating and ultimately humane portrait of survival in one of the world's most fragile cities — sustained by the resilience and hope of those with the least to lose.
