Overview

Houria is an experimental documentary that weaves together the stories of Hattab and his grandmother Yousra, exploring fluid and fractured modes of belonging in the Palestinian experience. Yousra was violently expelled from her village of Jamaseen Al-Garbi by Zionist paramilitary forces in 1948 and resettled in Jaffa after the Nakba, bearing witness to the slow erasure of its former glory. Hattab, presented as a hybrid mermaid figure symbolizing the shores of Manshiyyeh north of Tel Aviv, embodies both the liminal existence of those driven from Palestine and the profound longing to reclaim a national identity. A poetic meditation on exile, memory, and belonging.
