A Magical Substance Flows Into Me is a documentary film tracing the legacy of Robert Lachmann, a German-Jewish ethnomusicologist whose 1930s radio programme Oriental Music recorded live musical performances by musicians from diverse ethnic and religious communities across Mandatory Palestine. Palestinian artist Jumana Manna travels through present-day Israel and the Palestinian territories armed with Lachmann's original recordings, presenting them to Moroccan, Kurdish, and Yemenite Jews, Samaritans, urban and rural Palestinians, Bedouins, and Coptic Christians, and asking each community to perform the songs anew. The result is a profound meditation on cultural memory, identity, and the ways music survives — and transforms — across decades of conflict and displacement.
