A Girl from Dar El Salam is an Egyptian social drama film that shines a harsh light on the vulnerability of young working-class women in Cairo. Manal lives in the impoverished district of Dar El Salam, and after completing her secondary education, she sets out to earn an independent living. A friend arranges a job for her as a domestic worker in an elderly man's home — a decision that destroys the life she hoped to build. After the man sexually assaults her, Manal finds herself trapped into marrying him by social and economic pressures. The nightmare deepens when she discovers her husband is mentally ill, leaving her fighting for survival in a story that refuses to look away from the realities facing young Egyptian women.
