Overview

The Disqualified is a Tunisian documentary spanning twelve years in the turbulent life of Mehrez, a man from Mohammedia, Tunisia. A gifted dancer and actor with genuine talent, Mehrez is equally defined by his irresistible addiction to gambling and horse racing — a compulsion that keeps him perpetually on the edge. The film follows his daily battle with himself and with the bewildering contradictions of post-revolution Tunisia, as he pursues an obsessive quest for authentic emotion and raw expression. Director and subject together build a rare and unflinching portrait of passion, self-destruction, and the blurry line between art and compulsion.
