Overview

The Cheetah is a landmark Syrian historical drama adapted from a novel by celebrated writer Haider Haider, directed by Nabil al-Maleh. Set in Syria in the early twentieth century, the film follows the Cheetah — played by Adib Qaddoura — an ordinary peasant whose land is seized by colonial authorities who then subject him to imprisonment, torture, and humiliation at the hands of the gendarmerie. Refusing to break, he takes to the mountains and becomes a solitary rebel waging a fierce one-man resistance. The film won the top prize at the Locarno Film Festival in 1972 and was later recognized by the Busan International Film Festival as one of the greatest masterpieces in Asian cinema history.
