The Fatimids built Al-Azhar for the purpose of Shiite preaching and education, but it turned into a Sunni beacon. It topped the ranks of resistance to the invaders and leadership of the renewal movements. After the July Revolution, it entered a complex phase with attempts to subjugate it, leading to the January 25 Revolution.
