Overview

Abou Leila is a 2019 Algerian drama set against the brutal civil conflict of 1994. Childhood friends S. and Lotfi set out into the unforgiving Saharan desert in pursuit of a dangerous fugitive terrorist known as Abou Leila. Their mission seems increasingly irrational — the Sahara has seen no terrorist activity — and it gradually becomes clear that Lotfi's real motive is to keep the fragile S. far from the bloodshed consuming Algiers. As the two push deeper into the desert, they are forced to confront their own capacity for violence. A haunting and visually striking film exploring trauma, friendship, and the psychology of war.
