The composer and musician is Egyptian, born in 1908 in the city of Tanta, Gharbia Governorate. He learned to play the violin in its social school. At the age of sixteen, he joined the Oulad Okasha band in Azbakeya. He continued to play music accompanying silent film shows at the Ideal Cinema (now located in the Republic Theater) in the Abdeen neighborhood in central Cairo. The Ministry of Public Education - now Education - sent him and his brother Mahmoud to study music at the Music College. Higher University in the French capital, Paris, from which he obtained a bachelor’s degree in 1934, where he was appointed inspector in the ministry. He composed soundtracks for performances presented by the Opera House. He was the first to perform a solo violin performance on Egyptian radio when it opened in 1934. He led an orchestra bearing his name in the Arabic section of the radio. He joined the army music industry and continued in it until the rank of colonel. Then he became director of army music and was transferred after the outbreak of the July 1952 revolution as a music advisor. He sang on the radio and then on television until he retired in 1968, devoting himself only to composing in his last years. He died on April 12, 1982.
